Pearl necklaces are generally described using specific terms that pertain to the length of the necklace.
COLLAR: A collar sits directly on the throat with no hang down. Typical pearl collars range in length from 10 to 13 inches. CHOKER: Ranges in length from 14 to 16 inches and sits at the base of the neck. PRINCESS LENGTH: 17 to 19 inches in length and extends to the collar bone. MATINEE LENGTH: Falls to just above the breasts and typically 20 to 24 inches in length. OPERA LENGTH: An opera length pearl necklace generally measures 28 to 35 inches and extends to the sternum of the wearer. PEARL ROPE: Typically a pearl rope necklace is greater than 45 inches in length, and falls farther than an opera.
Pearl necklaces are sometimes described by the relative size of the pearls within the strand. In a uniform pearl necklace, the difference in the diameter of the pearls within the necklace is no more than 0.5 mm. On the other hand, graduated pearl necklaces have pearls with gradually increasing diameters, with the largest pearls at the bottom of the pearl necklace, and the smallest pearls resting on the back of the neck. |
